Fact Check: Old video of a man jumping from a building in Mexico City falsely linked to Liam Payne’s death in Argentina

A disturbing and sensitive video, showing an individual either jumping or falling from a building, has been circulating online with false claims that it depicts English singer and songwriter Liam Payne, who died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. However, D-Intent Data has found that the video in question is actually an older clip from Mexico City, recorded in September 2023. 

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) @anilharyana22  wrote. Heartbreaking News: We are deeply saddened to learn that Liam Payne, 31, has tragically died following a balcony fall in Argentina. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his loved ones and fans.

Another user @Shersinghposwal also shared the video and wrote. “ Liam Payne has died at the age of 31 after reportedly falling from a balcony in Argentina. We are extremely shocked and heartbroken to hear this news. Sending our love to his family, friends and fans around the world. Very bad.”

The truth about the viral video shared as Liam Payne’s death, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the sensitive video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video. And found that the video was unrelated to Liam Payne’s death in Argentina but an old video from Mexico City.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to several media reports containing the same visuals. According to the media reports (1, 2, 3), this video is from Mexico City where a fire broke out in an apartment in a building in the Historic Center the man experienced moments of panic when he saw his apartment start to catch fire, which forced him to take the risk of jumping out of a window.

As per the reports, this incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, September 13, 2023, in the building located between Cuba and Chile streets, in the first square of the city.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the viral video was not related to the death of Liam Payne . But an old video from Mexico City.
