Fact Check: Old video of a victory parade from 2020 falsely linked to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war

A video circulating online shows multiple fighter jets flying in formation over residential buildings and striking targets, with claims that it represents recent Russian strikes on Ukraine amid the ongoing war. However, these claims are inaccurate and misleading. The video is a combination of two separate clips, both of which are old and unrelated.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) @Worldwar_3_  wrote, “BREAKING: Russian Airstrikes on Ukraine. Russian planes have reportedly begun carrying out a series of coordinated airstrikes across multiple regions in Ukraine. The strikes are targeting critical infrastructure, military installations, and urban areas, escalating the conflict to a new intensity.”

Several other users and Influencers have also shared the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @RajnathC20190, @hossansaruar0

The truth about the viral video of war, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the visuals are old and unrelated to each other.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to several media reports (1, 2, 3) and a YouTube video containing the visuals.

The video is a combination of two separate clips. The first segment, featuring fighter jets flying over residential areas, is actually from a Russian military parade held in 2020 and has no connection to any combat operations. The second segment, showing explosions purportedly from Russian airstrikes, has been available online since at least February 2022.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the viral video depicts two different incidents unrelated to each other.
