Fact Check: Old video of Cyclone Tauktae from Mumbai shared with distorted claims

Recently, a video has appeared on social media platforms showing water flooding around the Gateway of India and the Taj Hotel. The claim accompanying the video suggests that the Arabian Sea recently breached barriers near the Gateway of India, reaching the Taj Mahal Hotel. However, D-Intent Data has verified that this video is from ‘Cyclone Tauktae 2021’, and no such incident has occurred recently.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) an account MUMBAI NEWS (@Mumbaikhabar9) wrote, “The Arabian Sea crossed the barriers near Gateway of India to touch the Taj Mahal hotel today.”  As of now, the post has received more than 200k views, 2k likes and significant numbers of engagements.

Lokmat Times Nagpur has also shared the video and wrote, “Arabian Sea crossed the barriers near Gateway of India to touch the Taj Mahal hotel. Heavy rains battered Mumbai yesterday”.

Several other users, influencers and media outlets have also disseminated the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here @newsbulletin05, @JUS_FANofRG

The truth about the viral video of Tauktae Cyclone, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice, we conducted research and found that this is an old video from May 2021.

To verify the claims made by the users and media outlets, we did a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google. This led us to a media report(NS Now) containing the same video uploaded in May 2021. According to the report, this video was recorded during ‘Cyclone Tauktae’ in 2021.
