Fact Check: Hindu woman killed and hanged for refusing to wear a hijab in Bangladesh’s Shariatpur? 

A disturbing video depicting a woman hanging from a tree has been widely shared online, along with false allegations that a Hindu woman was killed and hanged in Bangladesh for refusing to wear a hijab. Some social media users further propagated the claim that it was a murder. However, these assertions have been proven entirely false and misleading. Based on reports and preliminary investigations, the woman, identified as Kakli Akhtar, tragically took her own life due to personal struggles stemming from a romantic relationship.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @ajaychauhan41 wrote, Yesterday in Bangladesh, a Hindu girl was murdered for not wearing a hijab and her body was hung on a tree in Shariatpur, Bangladesh. Bangladeshi Muslim girls are roaming around without burqa and hijab, but Hindu girls are being forced to wear hijab!

Another propaganda account @modified_hindu6 also shared the video and wrote, “After killing the girl, she was hanged from a tree. Address: District Shariatpur, Upazila Jazira, Union Purba Nao Doba – Bangladesh”.

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also disseminated the visuals and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @Modified_Hindu9, @avroneel80, @Bangladesh_Fact, NasreenTaslima (Facebook).

The truth about the video shared as Hindu woman killed, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the visuals and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video. We found that the incident was not related to religious hate crimes against Hindus.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keyword searches and found multiple reports (1, 2) and an initial social media post regarding the incident. According to reports and a preliminary investigation, the woman, identified as Kakli Akhtar, committed suicide due to personal issues related to a romantic relationship. She was not from the Hindu community, and the incident was unrelated to murder or hijab.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the claims about a Hindu woman being murdered were false and baseless.

Influencers are circulating sensitive videos from Bangladesh with misleading claims to set their narrative based on religion.
