Fact check: Old Video of Vice President Gibran Misrepresented as Recent

A video of Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka is being circulated with the false claim that he recently met protestors amid ongoing violent demonstrations. In reality, the video is old, having been online since at least May 28, 2025, and is not related to the current protests in Indonesia.

The video was shared by the Facebook account Ardic Sheto, claiming:
“Wapres Gibran turun temui Pendemo Semuaorang Pengikut #wapres #gibran”
presenting the footage as if it were a current event.

Truth: Old Video of Vice President Gibran Misrepresented

As this claim gained traction, it drew our attention. The D-Intent Data Team investigated the video using reverse image research and frame-by-frame analysis. Our findings led us to two credible sources: the YouTube channel Tribun Papuaposted the video on 28 May 2025, titled “Gibran Confronted by Students in Bengkulu, Briefly Chaotic During Demo on Fuel Crisis Demands”

And the channel Wakil Presiden Republik Indonesia posted it on 27 May 2025 as “Ensuring Government Presence: Vice President Gibran Visits Evacuation Sites After Bengkulu Earthquake at Night”. Both confirm that the footage is old and unrelated to any current demonstrations.

Intent:

Influencers are circulating old videos without context to create a misleading narrative about the unrest in Indonesia.
