Fact Check: Old video of Yeti Airlines plane crash from Pokhara falsely linked to a recent plane crash at Kathmandu

According to report, at least 18 passengers, including a Yemeni national, and a child, were killed after a domestic plane with 19 people on board slipped off the runway and crashed on July 24 while trying to take off from the airport serving Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. A video of moments before a plane crash has gone viral on social media platforms. And linked to the recent plane crash at Kathmandu airport in Nepal. However, D-Intent Data has found that this is in an old video of Yeti Airlines plane crash from Pokhara Airlines Flight 691 crashed in January 2023.

Several users, influencers and propagandists have shared the video. And claimed to be from the recent Saurya Airlines plane crash in Kathmandu. 

Serial fake news peddler and propagandist, self-proclaimed OSINT @RealBababanaras has shared the video on X (Formerly Twitter) and said. At least 19 people died after Plane crashes during takeoff at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Another propaganda account @SaffronSunanda on X has also shared the video and wrote. Plane Crashed in Nepal, 18 casualties till now. I have travelled once in these kinds of 20-25 year old Bombardier CRJ-200 planes of Saurya Airlines for once. The condition of those planes were very bad and the flight was scary as hell. This was bound to happen one day. Families of the departed souls must sue Shaurya Airlines.

The truth about the viral video of Yeti Airlines plane crash from Pokhara, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video claiming to be recent came to our notice, we conducted research and found that the video was not related to the recent Saurya Airlines plane crash in Kathmandu.

To verify the claims made by the users, we did a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google which led us to a News18’s Facebook post containing the same video uploaded on 15 January 2023. According to the post, this video is of a Yeti Airlines plane crash from Pokhara, Nepal. 

Moreover, the same video of the Yeti Airlines plane crash was found on the YouTube channel of ABC News uploaded on January 16, 2023,the video’s title reads Yeti Airlines passenger plane crashes in Nepal. 

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video of moments before a plane crash is not from the recent Saurya Airlines plane crash in Kathmandu, but an old video of the Yeti Airlines plane crash in Pokhara, January 2023.

Social media users, influencers and propagandists are circulating old videos from different incidents. And claiming to be from the recent plane crash at Kathmandu airport to get the spotlight on social media.
