Fact Check: Propagandists circulate misleading claims about US reciprocal tariffs on India

Pakistan-based anti-India propaganda accounts are falsely claiming that the United States is planning to impose additional heavy tariffs solely on Indian goods. However, this narrative is misleading. Reports confirm that U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the U.S. will implement reciprocal tariffs on multiple countries, including India, China, and Brazil, starting April 2. He justified the move by criticizing these nations for maintaining high tariffs on American products.

Making a post on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandists account @SAnPerspective wrote, “United States likely to impose more heavy tariffs on Indian goods, reports.”

Another propaganda account @newstrackdaily also disseminated Donald Trump’s video and wrote, “Modi’s “Friend” Strikes Again! Trump has slapped massive tariffs on India starting April 2, set to hit the economy and stock market hard. And Modi? Silent as always. No outrage, no debate, no “56-inch” response—just blind obedience. The weakest PM India has seen in decades.’

The truth behind the claims about US tariffs on India, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the claims. We found that the US president Donald Trump talked about reciprocal tariffs on different countries, not only India.

To verify the claims made by propagandists. We performed relevant keywords searches and found multiple reports regarding the claims. According to reports (1, 2), the United States’ new reciprocal tariff policy, set to take effect on April 2, 2025, is designed to address trade imbalances by imposing equivalent tariffs on countries that apply higher duties on U.S. exports. This policy is not specific to India but applies to multiple nations, including China, Brazil, and members of the European Union, where significant tariff disparities exist.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the US reciprocal tariff is not specific to India but applies to multiple nations.

Intent

Propagandists are circulating selective claims about the US reciprocal tariffs to set their narrative against India.
