Fact Check: Semi-naked woman dragged and paraded by relatives in Dahod, Gujarat, propagandists circulate casteist claims 

A disturbing video showing a semi-naked woman being assaulted and publicly paraded has circulated widely, with claims that it represents a caste-based hate crime and an atrocity against a tribal community in Gujarat. However, investigations reveal that the incident stemmed from a personal dispute. The woman was allegedly attacked by her relatives over accusations of an extramarital affair. The incident occurred on January 28 in Dhalmisal village, Gujarat, when the woman visited another man’s home to meet him.

Sharing the video on the X (Formerly Twitter) propaganda account, @HansrajMeena wrote, “In Dahod, Gujarat, a tribal woman was stripped naked and paraded and brutally beaten by a mob, which is extremely reprehensible and shameful. This incident highlights the failure of the BJP government and the increasing atrocities on the tribal community. Strict action should be taken against the culprits.” Later, he deleted the post.

Another propaganda account @common000786Om also shared the video and wrote, “In Dahod, Gujarat, a tribal woman was beaten and paraded naked by a mob. Are we living in the 21st century? Despite having a woman president, such incidents are not being curbed?”  Later, he deleted the post.

The truth behind the claims about the video of Semi-naked woman dragged, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident. We found that the incident was not related to a caste-based hate crime against a tribal woman.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keyword searches and found media reports and police statements regarding the incident. According to the reports (1, 2), the incident stemmed from a personal dispute. The woman was allegedly attacked by her relatives over accusations of an extramarital affair. The incident occurred on January 28 in Dhalmisal village, Gujarat, when the woman visited another man’s home to meet him. A mob, led by her father-in-law, brother-in-law, and several women, forcibly dragged her out and assaulted her. Following the incident, police conducted a thorough operation and arrested the suspects, including four women, four men, and four minors. Additionally, Dahod police also helped the victim woman to open a vegetable shop named ‘Aatma Gaurav’ in Fatepura. 

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the incident was not related to caste-based hate crimes against a tribal woman.
