Fact Check: Video of lawyers assaulting a man in Raipur falsely linked to Ambedkar’s statue vandalism case in Amritsar

A video showing a group of lawyers assaulting a man in police custody while officers attempt to protect him has been circulating with the claim that it depicts the lawyers assaulting the person who vandalized Dr Ambedkar’s statue. However, this claim is false. The video is unrelated to the Ambedkar statue vandalism case in Amritsar. It is from Raipur, where an accused in the attack on a senior advocate in Shivanand Nagar was assaulted by lawyers at the Raipur Court premises.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) @TheJonyVerma wrote, You cannot live peacefully in India by breaking Baba Saheb’s statue. No one can save you. Now see how this bastard is being treated like a dog. Next time if anyone breaks Baba Saheb’s statue, first break it properly, then give it to the police, and then the police will also break it. Jai Bhim. (Translated from Hindi).

Propaganda account @seemabodhi also disseminated the video and wrote, “Manuwadi who broke Baba Saheb’s statue in Amritsar was beaten up during his court appearance”.

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also shared the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @vimleshAzamgarh, @AnandOmhari, @DeepakAzad84065, @rohitraoBSP001.

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video. We found that the video was not related to Ambedkar’s statue vandalism in Amritsar.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to media reports containing the same visuals.
