Fact-check: Video of Sheikh Sufi Muhammad Asghar circulated as Brighton and Hove’s mayor Mohammed Asaduzzaman

Recently, a video that shows a group of Muslim people greeting their religious leader with garlands on the road has gone viral with misleading claims. Several users, influencers and propagandists have shared the video with the claim that the individual being greeted is the newly elected Brighton and Hove mayor, Mohammed Asaduzzaman, who is of Bangladeshi origin. However, D-Intent Data has found that it is an old video of Sheikh Sufi Muhammad Asghar, which is being circulated in the name of Brighton and Hove Mayor Mohammed Asaduzzaman.

Old video of Sheikh Sufi Muhammad Asghar circulated with misleading claims

Several users, influencers, self-proclaimed media outlets and propagandists have shared the video. And claimed that the individual being greeted is the mayor of Brighton Mohammed Asaduzzaman.

Sharing the video on X, propaganda account @realwajidkhan has said. “He is the mayor of the city of Brighton in England. His name is Mohammed Asaduzzaman and he is of United Indian(Akhand Bharat) origin. He is the first Muslim mayor of Brighton. And this time 23 Muslim MPs have also been elected in Britain. He later deleted the post.

Another propaganda account @epanchjanya on X (Formerly Twitter) has also shared the video and said, “Islamabad’s new mayor sahab! Oh no, no….He is the mayor of Brighton, a city in England. His name is Mohammad Asaduzzaman and he is of Bangladeshi origin. He is Brighton’s first Muslim mayor. And this video is also from Brighton, England, not from any Muslim country.

Truth about the video of Sheikh Sufi Muhammad, fact-check

As soon as the posts containing the video came to our knowledge, we conducted research and found that the man being greeted in the is not Brighton Mayor Mohammed Asaduzzaman but a religious leader Sheikh Sufi Muhammad Asghar.

During research, we found a video featuring the same individual, on a YouTube channel named “Aslamiya Foundation”. The video’s description reads Welcome of Sheikh Sufi Muhammad Asghar to Peterborough, U.K. After knowing this we did research and found a similar videos (1, 2) of Sheikh Sufi Muhammad Asghar being greeted at different places. The mayor of Brighton and Hove Mohammed Asaduzzaman doesn’t look like the man seen in the video.

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s fact-check that the individual seen in the video is not Brighton and Hove mayor Mohammed Asaduzzaman. But religious leader Sheikh Sufi Muhammad Asghar.
