Fact Check: Viral Claim About Indian Navy and Rohingya Is Fake

A false narrative is currently circulating on social media platforms, particularly promoted by Pakistan-based propaganda accounts. These misleading posts allege that the Indian Navy killed several Rohingya Muslims by throwing them into the sea during a deportation process. However, verified reports and a review by India’s Supreme Court confirm there is no evidence of mistreatment; the allegations are entirely false and legally baseless.

One of the most widely shared posts, made by the account @TacticalTribun on X (formerly Twitter), falsely claims that a United Nations report states that the Indian Navy threw multiple Rohingya Muslims into the sea and killed them because of their faith.

The Truth Behind Rohingya Deportation: Supreme Court Confirms No Mistreatment by Indian Navy:

As this post gained traction on social media, the D-Intent data team started an investigation. We searched news outlets, government websites, and other sources to verify whether the claim was true or not. We found that verified reports confirm that around 43 Rohingya migrants were deported from India to Myanmar, and there is no evidence to suggest they were mistreated or harmed in the process. Furthermore, India’s Supreme Court reviewed a petition related to this issue and found no merit in the claims, dismissing the plea and affirming that the allegations were legally baseless and unsupported by any factual evidence. On Friday, May 16, the Supreme Court expressed disbelief at a writ petition alleging that 43 Rohingyas—including children, women, the elderly, and individuals with serious health conditions such as cancer—were forcibly deported by the Indian government to Myanmar by being thrown into international waters. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh refused to entertain the petition, questioning its credibility. “People who are sitting outside cannot challenge our sovereignty,” the bench remarked when the petitioner cited a UN report.

Intent:

Propaganda accounts are spreading false claims about Rohingya deportation to create a negative narrative against India, aiming to mislead the public and harm India’s reputation.
