Old Video Showing Traders Beating a Thief in Bharatpur, Rajasthan Circulated as from Bihar With Casteist Claims: Fact-Check

A few days ago, a video from Bharatpur in Rajasthan depicting a brutal fight involving a group of youths mercilessly beating a person with sticks inside a store started circulating online, it was accompanied by claims suggesting that this incident occurred recently in Bihar, targeting a Dalit individual who was forced to drink urine when he requested water from members of the upper-caste Hindu community. The fake and misleading news was shared by pro-Pakistan propagandist account @SAHR_Watch.

Misleading Claims, Reality from Rajasthan

In August 2022, a thief was apprehended by a group of traders in Bharatpur, Rajasthan and the video is from there not Bihar. The thief was caught in the act, and the traders took matters into their own hands. They resorted to beating the thief as a form of vigilante justice. The incident unfolded inside a store, where the traders dealt with the thief using force.

The thief, realizing the severity of the situation, ultimately surrenders by providing his identity card and confessing to his crime. Law enforcement authorities were informed, and a formal case was registered against the thief based on the evidence and statements. Subsequently, appropriate legal action was taken in line with the prevailing laws. To know more about the incident, check out an article by the Dainik Bhaskar.
