Social media users are sharing an old video of a group of people beating an old man on a busy street for saying “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” (Long live mother India).

On October 15, 2019, in the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, a man was beaten up by a group of people for allegedly abusing people on the street. The old man was heard chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and using foul language in this video.

Misleading claims:

A twitter user sharing the viral video wrote, “A grown man raises slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, In return he gets kicked by the Muslims. Will this slogan be raised if not in India, then in Pakistan…? What situation has Delhi CM Kejriwal created…?” He received about 25.8k views after tweeting it on X.

Is this incident true?

It came to light that this incident was not at all true.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of Azad Chowk, where local shopkeepers beat the old man because he allegedly used to extort money from them.

Hotchand, a 55-year-old, was the victim. After an inquiry, all of the defendants were found. In the same area, Hotchand operated a stand and had a past of conflict with nearby retailers. It was well known that he almost regularly picked fights with customers and bystanders.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa, shared in his twitter post, that the incident occurred in Bhilwara’s Azad Chowk Market, and the Rajasthan police were requested to detain the suspect for physically abusing an elderly man.
