Scripted Video Of Muslim Cleric Marrying A Woman Through “Nikah Halala” Circulated as Real: Fact-Check

A video purporting to show a group of people engaged in a verbal brawl over triple talaq and Halala has gone viral.

Azzat Alsalem (“@AzzatAlsaalem“) tweeted “A MusIim man, gave his wife ‘triple talaq’ (divorce). Following Sharia law, he arranged for his wife’s temporary marriage for one night with an elderly Maulavi. when he returned the next day to retrieve his wife, the Maulavi refused to return her to him.” . The tweet was made on Dec 4, 2023, contributing to the spread of the information.

Verified accounts on twitter, including @ajaychauhan41 made the same claim by tweeting “A viral video from Bangladesh shows justice being administered on the basis of Sharia law regarding Halala marriage. A young man got angry and gave triple talaq to his wife. Following Sharia law, he was obliged to arrange his wife’s temporary marriage (Halala) for one night with an elderly cleric of the village. After that night, when he returned the next day to take back his wife, the Maulvi refused to return it. It is seen in the video that the young man is having an argument with the villagers. Justice was administered according to Sharia rules in the village, where a respected elderly maulana ruled that the young man could not get his wife back unless the maulvi who married her divorced her. Ultimately, the elderly Maulvi who conducted the Halala Nikah happily took the wife to his home.”

Several other accounts, including @Shunyaa00 claimed the same that a young man gave his wife a “triple talaq,” or divorce, out of rage. He had to set up his wife’s one-night temporary marriage (halala) with an elderly Maulavi in the village in accordance with Sharia law. When he went back the following day to get his wife after that night, the Maulavi would not give her back to him. The young man is seen arguing with the villagers in the video.
