Old Video Showing Police Beating Protestors in UP’s Saharanpur Circulated as Mira Road Riots: Fact-Check 

A video purporting to show police beating the rioters involved in the #MiraRoadRiots has been circulated and shows a policeman beating a group of men in the lockup.

Verified accounts on twitter, including Journalist Archana Tiwari (“@ArchanaaTiwari“) claimed that the video of the incident shows a policeman beating a group of rioters in the lockup who has been involved in the Mira Road Riots. The user also sarcastically added “How did you like the video @zoo_bear …. If there is anything missing in Khaditari, then do two or four more tweets and hope that too gets completed…” referring to the video. The tweet was made on Jan 25, 2024, which has received an about 370.8k views on X.

Several other accounts, including SK Chakraborty (“@sanjoychakra“), @mind_kracker ,@AsianDigest, @AlFarisEmirati, @stairwayto3dom also made the same claim that the footage shows police hitting the rioters involved in the Mira Road Riots inside the lockup. The archive can be read from above.

The incident also got circulated to be from Kheralu in Gujarat. Sahal Qureshi (Hakam) (“@IMSahalQureshi“) tweeted “This video is being viral on social media as being from Kheralu in Gujarat, I don’t know where this video is from, but under what law has this policeman got the permission to use batons like this, it is beyond understanding! Just as this policeman is beating these boys with baton, similarly the whip of law should be used on this policeman!” on Jan 26, 2024. This viral tweet with 45.5k views contributed to the spread of the information to many more social media users.
