Havana, Cuba— Old Image Of People Attending Funeral Ceremony of Fidel Castro Falsely Linked To Protests For Power Outages and Food Shortages: Fact-Check

A photo purporting to show a large crowd from the most recent protests in Cuba has being circulated.

Verified accounts on twitter, including @UKR_token shared the picture of the crowd and tweeted “#VivaCubaLibre #CubaEnLaCallePidiendoLibertad” on March 20, 2024. The tweet has received an about 48.3k views on X.

Several other accounts, including @visegrad24 made the same claim that the picture of the massive crowd is from the recent protests in Cuba. The archive can be read from above.

What is the Actual Truth About this Incident? : Fact

In actuality, this is an old photo taken in Havana that shows attendees of Fidel Castro, the Cuba Former President’s funeral  ceremony in 2016. The current protests in Cuba against food shortages and power outages have nothing to do with it. We visited kun.uz, which published an article on this incident on Nov 30, 2016 with the headline “A million people came to Fidel Castro’s funeral”. A public event honouring the memory of Fidel Castro, the leader of the Cuban revolution, drew about a million attendees, according to RIA “Novosti”.At the age of 90, Fidel Castro, the legendary leader of the Cuban Revolution, passed away on November 25. In Santiago de Cuba, on December 4, there was to be a funeral. The country has declared nine days of mourning beginning on November 26. For more clarification, we also went to amerika21.de, which wrote about this in an incident published on Nov 30, 2016 with the heading “Millions honor Fidel Castro in Havana”. The picture of the crowd was posted with the caption “The sprawling Revolution Square had already filled with hundreds of thousands throughout the day”.
