Old Video Of Massive Crowd at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata Falsely Linked To Save Democracy Rally by the INDI Alliance in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan: Fact-Check

A photo purporting to be a recent one from the Loktantra Bachao (#SaveDemocracy) rally in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan features a large number of people.

@HansrajTribal_ tweeted “A storm has risen in the capital Delhi against Narendra Modi. Everyone has to come together to save democracy. The dictator has to be defeated. #SaveDemocracy” on March 31, 2024. The tweet has received an about 93.3k views on X.

Several other accounts, including @PrishaSargam, @PrahladDalwadi, @ProfAshokSwain, @Jeetuburdak, @bloggingpanda87, @B7801011010, @banojyotsna, @RavinderKapur2 made the same claim that the image is fromthe Loktantra Bachao( #SaveDemocracy )rally in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan. The image once again got viral during Feb, 2021. @INCWestBengal tweeted “WBPCC President Shri @adhirrcinc , Chief Minister of Chattishgarh Shri @bhupeshbaghel addressed the 8 lakh people strong historic rally at Brigade Parade Ground , Kolkata organised by Samyukta Morcha, the alliance between INC and the Left parties.” on Feb 28, 2021. Also, @Gayatri_Raguram tweeted the same picture on March 7, 2021 and wrote “Modi ocean in Bengal”.

What is the Actual Truth About this Incident? : Fact

The truth is that this is an outdated photo from West Bengal, where in February 2019 left parties organised an enormous rally at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground. This photograph has been disseminated by political parties on several occasions. The picture is outdated and unrelated to the INDI Alliance’s Save Democracy rally in Delhi. On February 3, over a million people gathered at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, for a Left Front-led rally, creating a’red sea’ of humanity. These activists committed to depose the far-right Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led administration at the Centre and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal in the upcoming elections.
