Video Of Buddhist Monk from Sri Lanka Circulates as Hindu Priest: Fact-Check

For the last couple of days, a video has been circulated on various social media platforms which shows a bald, shirtless man and two partially naked women being harassed by a group of people, the trio of two women and a man were beaten up with the pipes as seen in the video.

Several users have shared this video of two women and a man in abnormal conditions with the claim that the man is a Hindu priest or Brahmin who was caught in a sex scandal with two partially naked women. Some users also claim him to be Sukrana Guruji, “Jai Guru ” who died in 2007. Several users targeted the entire Hindu priest community while taunting Hindu Rashtra. As soon as we learned about the video being circulated on social media, we tried to know the reality behind the viral video.Upon research, the D-Intent Data team found the origin & reality of the viral video. During research we found multiple news reports 1, 2 suggesting the video to be from Sri Lanka. According to reports a Buddhist monk named Pallegama Sumana Thero and two women were harassed and beaten up by the members of the “Donor Council” in Navagamuwa after being caught. Local police have arrested 8 individuals after a complaint filed by the monk.
