Fact Check: Video of Cardamom auction from Bodinayakanur, Tamil Nadu, circulated with misleading claims

A video showing an individual distributing cardamom to a group of people seated at a long table with computers and small bowls has been shared with the false claim that food is being served to employees at a call center. However, we found the same video uploaded on YouTube in 2017, where the channel confirms that it depicts cardamom samples being tested at an auction in Bodinayakanur, Tamil Nadu.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter), propaganda account @AsianDigest wrote, “Call center Food Service”.

The truth about the video from Tamil Nadu, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video. We found that the video was unrelated to food distribution.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some keyframes from the video using Google Lens. This led us to a YouTube video containing the same visuals. According to the YouTube channel, the video depicts cardamom samples being tested at an auction in Bodinayakanur, Tamil Nadu. This video has no connection to food distribution or a call center. Also, upon closer observation of the video,  it is clearly visible that the individual is distributing cardamom. We also located the place on Google Maps.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the video was unrelated to food distribution at a call center.
