An image purportedly showing a man walking with three chained women in burqa has been shared as an actual photograph. The image is being projected as a husband taking his chained wives for a walk. However, D-Intent Data has found that this is a decades-old image that has been digitally altered.

Imtiaz Mahmood (@ImtiazMadmood) on X (Formerly Twitter) has shared the image with the caption. “A compassionate husband taking his wives out for a walk”.
Salwan Momika who is known for his anti-Muslim stance has also shared the image and captioned. “ We struggle not to see these scenes on the streets of the West.Are you with us?”.
During research we found that the same image was also shared by @HPhobiaWatch during the “What’s wrong with India?” trend in March 2024. Sharing the image, @HPhobiaWatch has said. “A Muslim man from Hyderabad is walking with his 3 sisters, tied them so that they won’t get abducted by Hindutva fanatics”.

Research, analysis and fact-check: Debunking the image of man walking with three chained women
As soon as the posts containing the image came to our knowledge, we did a reverse image search which led us to several reports and blog posts containing the image without shackles.
During research we found the same image in an article published by ABP news in 2017. There were no shackles in the original image.
We also found the same image in an article on moderndiplomacy published in 2017. There were no shackles in the image.
The image was also published in a blog post in 2011. No shackles were found in that image as well.
Hence, It is evident from D-Intent Data’s fact check that the photo is old and has been digitally altered. And the shackles were added by editing it.

Influencers circulate digitally altered images with false claims to target a particular community to set their narrative based on religion.
Conclusion
Claim- A Muslim man is taking his three wives for a walk, tied in chains.
Fact- The original image shows the three women are not chained, they were walking freely.
