Fact Check: A video of BCL activists being thrown from the roof of a building in Bangladesh is viral with communal claims

A sensitive, disturbing video showing a group of people holding on to the windows and pipes of a building is making rounds on social media platforms. The video shows some people can be seen falling off the building while trying to escape from a group of attackers. Several users, influencers and propagandists have shared the video. And claimed that protestors attacked the students belonging to the Hindu community in Bangladesh. However, D-Intent Data has found that this is a clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists and the protestors. Nothing to do with religious violence. 

Video disseminated with misleading claims about BCL activists

Several users, influencers and propagandists have shared the video of a few people being thrown from the roof of a building and made communal claims. 

Sharing the video and account @gargiMu48960835 on X (Formerly Twitter) wrote. How Hindu Students from Dhaka University trying to save their life from Jihadis,rajakars there #SaveBangladeshiHindus”

Another user @ssaratht on X has also shared the video and said, Caution: Graphic content, Horrible scenes coming from Bangladesh. When Izlamists attacked Hindus in Hindus hostel this is how they tried to escape and fell down. If Hindus in India ignore these, this situation is not too far away. Wake up.

VHP member Sourish Mukherjee (@me_sourish_) has also shared the video and wrote. Dreadful Scene at a Hindu Students from Dhaka Bangladesh. Watch how panic-stricken Hindu students tried to escape to save their lives from the attack perpetrated by Jamaat-e-Islami. See how many of them fell from cornices and parapets!

The truth about the viral video, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the video and communal claims came to our notice. We conducted research and found that the video was not related to religious violence against the Hindu community but a clash between protestors and BCL activists. 

During research, we found media reports containing the same visuals. According to the report, the video shows Chhatra League leaders and activists being thrown from the roof of a building during a clash between Chhatra League and Youth League with anti-quota activists in Chittagong’s Muradpur. 

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video is not related to religious violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh but a clash between BCL activists and anti-quota protestors.

Social media users and influencers are circulating sensitive videos from Bangladesh with misleading communal claims to set their narrative based on religion, over the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh.
