Fact Check: Decades-old image of a Pakistan Army funeral misattributed to the Jaffar Express hijacking in Bolan, Balochistan

An image showing a funeral ceremony with multiple coffins draped in Pakistan’s national flag placed on beds in an open field is being shared with claims that it is linked to the recent attack and hijacking of the Jaffar Express in Bolan, Balochistan, where the BLA allegedly killed several Pakistani soldiers. However, the truth is that this image is from February 2011, when a Taliban suicide bomber targeted a military compound in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

Sharing the image on X (Formerly Twitter), @Priyank78532802 wrote, Thank you, Baloch brothers. We were not taught to celebrate someone’s death, but Pakistanis celebrated the death of 40 soldiers in the Pulwama terrorist attack; now it is our time. Thank you, Baloch brothers. The result of our tolerance is that we have seen India breaking into pieces, but not anymore. (Translated from Hindi)

Another account, @VairagiUvaaCH, also shared the image and wrote, Balochistan is not Pakistan. Balochistan Independence Day is coming soon! Happy Holi Gift to Porkistan. #BalochLiberationArmy.

The truth about the viral image, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the image and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the photo. We found that the image was not recent but from an old incident.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search using Google Lens. This led us to several media reports containing the same image. According to reports (1, 2), this image dates back to February 2011, when a Taliban suicide bomber targeted a military compound in Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of at least 31 Pakistani soldiers and injuries to more than 40 others.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the image was old and unrelated to the recent Jaffar Express hijacking in Bolan, Balochistan.
