Fact Check: China plans to invest $23 billion to build a joint trade transit with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan?

Pakistan-based propaganda accounts are spreading false claims that China intends to invest $23 billion in a joint trade transit project with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Maldives, and the UAE. However, these claims are entirely fabricated. Currently, no publicly available information confirms such an investment by China.

Making a post on X (Formerly Twitter), a Pakistan-based propaganda account @NavCom24 wrote, “BREAKING: China plans to invest $23 Billion to build a joint trade transit with Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.”

Another propaganda account @TacticalTribun  from Pakistan also made a post and wrote, “China is planning to invest $23 billion to build a joint trade transit with Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.”

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also disseminated the false claims. Their posts can be seen here: @CrimesDigest/@HindGazette, @Pak_Watch24.

The truth behind the claims about China, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the claims made by propagandists came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis regarding the claims. We found that these claims were false and self-invented.

To verify the claims made by propagandists. We performed relevant keyword searches and thorough investigations but couldn’t find any verified and credible sources supporting these claims. As of now, there is no publicly available information confirming that China is planning to invest $23 billion to build a joint trade transit system with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Maldives, and the UAE.

However, China has been actively enhancing its trade and infrastructure partnerships with these nations through various initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). But CPEC faces growing economic and security failures amidst rising tensions in Pakistan, and due to growing unrest, Bangladesh urges China to reduce the interest rate on loans.

Moreover, we found conflicting posts about China’s $23 billion investment in a joint trade transit project. Some say it includes Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, while others mention Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the UAE. These differences make the claims unreliable.

Additionally, recent reports (1, 2) reveal that China has introduced a strategic investment plan to strengthen its capital markets.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the claims about China’s plans to invest $23 billion in a joint trade transit with these nations were false and self-invented.
