Fact Check: Decades-old news video about US woman being gang-raped in India circulated with distorted claims

Recently, a video has been circulated that shows a female news reporter discussing about US woman being gang-raped in India, with many portraying it as a recent occurrence. However, D-Intent Data has found that the video is old from 2013 and no such incident occurred in recent times. 

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) serial fake news peddler and propagandist account @realwajidkhan wrote. “An American tourist visiting India gang-raped!”. The post has received more than 50k views, 1.9k likes and a significant number of engagements. Later he deleted the post.

The truth about the video shared as US woman being gang-raped in India, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the news video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that this is an old incident from 2013. No such incident occurred in recent years.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to a YouTube video containing the same information featuring the same female news reporter, uploaded in June 2013. According to the news report, an American woman was gang-raped in Himachal Pradesh’s Manali in June 2013.

According to the Times of India, Three Nepalese men working as truck drivers were arrested and identified as Arjun (22), Lakki (24) and Som Bahadur (24). All of them were from Nepal. 

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video of a news reporter talking about a US woman being gang-raped in India was not recent but an old video from 2013. No such incident occurred in recent years. Moreover, the accused were from Nepal.
