Fact Check: DTC bus catches fire in Delhi’s Jagatpuri, users circulate misleading claims

A video showing a DTC bus engulfed in flames on a road has been shared, with claims that it was a pre-planned act by individuals from a particular community. However, according to credible media reports, the bus caught fire due to a short circuit. There is no evidence to support the claim that this was a targeted crime or an intentional act by any group. The narrative being pushed is misleading and does not reflect the actual cause of the fire.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter), @sanjeev_vhp wrote. “Wow, train jihad, bus jihad, where is the foreign hand involved?” (Translated from Hindi), later he deleted the post.

The truth about the claims about DTC bus, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video of a burning bus and claims came to our notice, we conducted research and analysis of the incident and found that it was not a targeted crime by people belonging to a particular community.

To verify the claims made by the users. Subsequently, we performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to several media reports containing the same visuals. According to the media reports(ANI, The Hindu). A low-floor Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus carrying about 50 passengers was gutted after catching fire in east Delhi’s Jagatpuri on Thursday,. Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said. According to a DFS officer, no passengers were injured in the incident and were rescued as soon as the bus caught fire. An initial probe suggests that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the vehicle’s air conditioning system.

Hence, it is evident from credible sources that the bus caught fire due to a short circuit, it was not a targeted hate crime as claimed by the users. The bus bus not targeted but caught fire due to short circuit.
