Fact Check: Excavation conducted to discover Temple but found Mosque in Sambhal?

Propagandists are spreading false claims that an excavation in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, was conducted to uncover a temple but instead revealed a mosque. However, these claims are false and fabricated. What was discovered during the excavation in the Laxman Ganj area of Chandausi, Sambhal was not a mosque but a stepwell.

Sharing the visuals on X (Formerly Twitter) @voiceofhumans01 wrote, “They had set out to dig the land in search of a temple but a mosque was found there!”

Propaganda account @azizkavish also posted the visuals and wrote, “A temple was being excavated in Sambhal but a mosque was found under the ground”.

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also disseminated the visuals and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @007AliSohrab, @Thiswrongnumber, @simabakhtar2, @dhruvrahtee, @66Hai_.

The truth behind the claims about Mosque in Sambhal, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the visuals and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis regarding the claims. We found that these claims are nothing but propaganda.

To verify the claims made by propagandists. We performed relevant keyword searches and found multiple reports regarding the excavation in Sambhal’s Chandausi. According to verified and credible sources (1, 2), during excavation work in the Laxman Ganj area, a stepwell, estimated to be 150 years old, was uncovered in Chandausi. The excavation is part of ongoing efforts by the Sambhal administration following the reopening of the Bhasma Shankar temple in Sambhal on December 13, after 46 years.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that during the excavation a stepwell was discovered, not a mosque.
