Fact-Check: Fake Video Falsely Claims Army Chief Proposed Giving Arunachal to China & Admitted Rafale Losses

A digitally altered video of Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi is circulating online, falsely claiming that he proposed handing over Arunachal Pradesh to China to stop Beijing from supporting Pakistan. The same fake clip also alleges that he admitted Chinese technology destroyed Rafale jets during recent India–Pakistan tensions. These claims are completely false, and the statements attributed to the Army Chief do not exist in the original video.

The misleading clip was first posted by the account @InsiderWB, claim:

Breaking: Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi comes with an out of the box solution to fix Pakistan military. He has proposed giving Arunachal to China in order to appease China to stop supporting Pakistan. Every word that Rahul Gandhi had said, comes out to be true. Narendar has surrendered.

after which several others including @L_8800_, @Saba5670, @fragranceofluv, @Shoa_70, @KiranKhanViews, and @C0LSHERKHAN amplified it across social media platforms.

Truth: Original Video Shows No Such Statements

As the false claim began spreading across social media, it came to our attention. The D-Intent Data Team carried out a detailed frame-by-frame analysis of the video. During this closer examination, we noticed the logo of The Tribune India. We then checked The Tribune’s official YouTube channel and located the complete, original version of the video titled “Indian Army Chief Gen Dwivedi Praises INS Mahe, Highlights Navy’s Anti-Submarine Dominance.” Additionally, the circulated clip shows a stable, unchanging background and unnatural facial movements—clear indicators that the viral video is fake. In the authentic footage:

  • General Dwivedi never mentions Arunachal Pradesh,
  • he never talks about China in any similar context,
  • he does not reference Rafale jets,
  • and he makes no political or controversial remarks.

The circulating video has been digitally manipulated, with fabricated audio or altered subtitles added to mislead viewers. No verified report, official statement, or credible source supports the claims made in the viral clip.

Intent:

Propaganda accounts are circulating digitally altered videos of the Indian Army Chief with self-invented claims to set their narrative against India over India-China relations.
