Fact Check: Four members of a Hindu family murdered in a religious hate crime in Bangladesh’s Kishoreganj?

Allegations have emerged suggesting that four members of a Hindu family in Bangladesh were killed in a religious hate crime. However, local reports and police investigations indicate that the incident has been classified as a suicide. The tragic event took place in Bhairab Upazila of the Kishoreganj district. 

Republic Bangla (@BanglaRepublic) reported that “Yunus Sarkar is conducting a Hindu Nidhna Yajna. The bodies of 4 members of a Hindu family were recovered in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh. Including the bodies of 2 children.” (Translated from Bengali)

The truth behind the claims, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident and found that these claims were not true.

To verify the claims made by the media outlets. We performed a relevant keyword search and found reports regarding the incident. According to local reports and the police, the incident has been identified as a case of suicide. The tragedy occurred in Bhairab Upazila of Kishoreganj district. The deceased have been identified as Johnny Chandra Biswas (35), his wife Nipa Mallik (30), their son Dhrub & daughter Katha. 

The incident came to light when an employee from Johnny’s workshop went to his flat, found the door locked from the inside, and received no response. Upon breaking into the flat, they discovered the bodies of Johnny’s wife and children on the bed, with visible signs of injury, and Johnny’s body hanging from the ceiling fan. It is believed that husband Johnny Biswas killed his two children and wife and committed suicide by hanging himself with a fan. The reason behind the incident is being investigated.

However, there are multiple reports of religious hate crimes against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. But this incident was not related to murder.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the incident was not related to religious hate crimes.
