Fact Check: The video of young men harassing a boy was not related to religious hate crime in Bangladesh

A video circulating on social media shows a group of young men harassing a boy to perform a dance, with claims suggesting it depicts crimes against Hindus in Bangladesh. However, this claim is misleading and inaccurate. The video is old and has no connection to religious hate crimes.

Propaganda account @INarsinghvani posted the video on X (Formerly Twitter) and portrayed it as a religious hate crime against Hindus in Bangladesh.

The truth about the viral video of young men harassing a boy, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis regarding the video and found that the video was old and unrelated to religious hate crimes.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to a YouTube video containing the same visuals uploaded in August 2024. Initial posts suggest that the boy in the video was a thief and punished when caught stealing.

Local sources reveal that whenever any thief gets caught stealing, people mock him by compelling him to dance (especially the Nagin dance) as punishment and public humiliation. This incident is unrelated to any religious or communal violence.‍ This trend started long ago when a dancer turned thief got caught.

We also found multiple similar videos (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) depicting people forcing different individuals to perform the dance.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video was old and unrelated to religious hate crime. However, we couldn’t find the identity of the victim.
