Fact Check: Minor rams car into religious procession in Jaipur, propagandists circulate misleading claims

A video showing a group of people vandalizing a car on the road has been widely circulated with the claim that the son of a BJP government official deliberately drove a high-speed car into a Nagar Kirtan in Jaipur, India, injuring several Sikhs in a hate crime. However, these claims are entirely misleading and fabricated.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propaganda account @udhokes wrote. “The son of a BJP govt official deliberately ran a high-speed car over Nagar Kirtan in Jaipur, India. Multiple Sikhs were injured and are in critical condition. #Sikhphobia and hate crimes against Sikhs at peak in India since #FarmersProtest.”

Another account @preetikaur69 also shared the video and wrote. “The son of a BJP govt official deliberately ran a high-speed car over Nagar Kirtan in Jaipur, India. Multiple Sikhs were injured and are in critical condition. hate crimes against Sikhs at peak in India”

The truth behind the claims from Jaipur, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident. We found that the incident was not related to religious hate crimes.

To verify the claims made by propagandists. We performed relevant keyword searches. We found reports regarding the incident. According to the reports (1, 2, 3, 4), a 14-year-old minor was driving the car. When signalled by the police to stop, the driver attempted to escape, allegedly accelerating and hitting the crowd participating in an event due to overspeeding. The incident is not connected to religious or targeted hate crimes against the Sikh community. 

As per the reports, the vehicle was allegedly being driven by the 14-year-old son of a policeman. While he was picked up by the police, three other youths allegedly travelling in the car escaped.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the incident was not related to religious hate crimes against the Sikh community.

Propagandists are circulating videos from unfortunate incidents with misleading claims to set their narrative based on religion.
