Fact Check: Misleading claims spread alongside sensitive video of dead body from Rajshahi, Bangladesh

A video featuring a dead body is being circulated with the false claim that Jamaat-e-Islami terrorists killed a Hindu leader named Nayan, who was allegedly tortured and murdered in Machmel village, Rajshahi, Bangladesh Bagmara. However, these claims are not true. In reality, the body recovered by police belonged to Nayan Mia (38), a van driver from Bagmara upazila in Rajshahi. He was the son of Afaz Uddin. Police suspect that Nayan Mia may have fallen into the water while crossing the pond with a bag of drugs after taking drugs. He is not a Hindu, but a Muslim.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @ajaychauhan41 wrote. “Jamaat-e-Islami terrorists are massacring Hindus in Bangladesh. Hindu leader Nayan was brutally tortured and killed in Machmel village of Rajshahi Bagmara”.

The truth behind the claims from Rajshahi Bangladesh, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the sensitive video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident and found that it was not related to a religious hate crime against Hindu individuals.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keyword searches and found multiple reports regarding the incident. According to the reports (1, 2, 3), the police said, police have recovered the body of Nayan Mia, a 38-year-old van driver and alleged drug peddler, from a pond in Bagmara, Rajshahi. Nayan Mia, the son of Afaz Uddin from Machamoil Borupukur village in Shuvodanga union, was found dead. His body has been sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. 

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video doesn’t depict religious hate crimes against Hindu individuals in Bangladesh.
