Fact Check: Old image of a dog carrying a baby’s body in Bangladesh, falsely shared as Gaza

A highly disturbing image of a dog carrying a baby’s body in its mouth has been shared online, falsely claiming to be from Gaza as a result of Israeli attacks. However, according to reports this is an old image from Bangladesh’s Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) Hospital, which originally went viral in January 2024.

Sharing the image on X (Formerly Twitter) @VyprCEO wrote, “I thought I had seen it all. A dog carrying a ԁеаԁ chіӏԁ to eat. јеԝѕ did this. I have nothing but rage left in me.”

Serial fake news peddler and propagandist account @Bernadotte22, known for Hamas sympathizer and posting content from Gaza also shared the image and wrote, “No words”.

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also disseminated the image and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @allbluesky76, @ModernClassic0.

The truth about the viral image of a dog carrying a baby’s body, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the image and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the image. We found that the image was not related to the Israel-Palestine conflict but an old incident from Bangladesh.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search using Google Lens. This led us to several Bangladeshi media reports containing the same photo. According to the reports (1, 2, 3), this is an old image from Bangladesh’s Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) Hospital, which originally went viral in January 2024. According to the hospital’s deputy director, Md. Zakiur Rahman, the image dates back to 2015. However, some locals assert it is more recent. Regardless of its timeline, it is clear that this image is unrelated to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the image was not related to the Israel-Palestine conflict. It is an old image from Bangladesh.

Propagandists are circulating old images from Bangladesh with misleading claims to set their narrative against Israel.
