Fact Check | Old Statement on BRICS Currency Misrepresented as Breaking News

Claims are circulating that India has recently rejected a BRICS joint currency and instead reaffirmed its preference for the U.S. dollar to preserve strong trade relations with the United States. These claims are being framed as breaking news, especially amid rising regional tensions in the Middle East and between India and Pakistan. However, this narrative is misleading. India’s opposition to a unified BRICS currency is not new and has been consistent over time.

A propaganda account @World_Affairs11 has repeatedly posted the same claim, presenting it as fresh news every time:

  • “India says it will not take joint steps with BRICS countries against dollar supremacy.”
  • “India rejects BRICS currency.”
  • “India says it will not cooperate with BRICS countries to replace the dollar with local currencies in trade.”
  • “India officially rejects the idea of BRICS currency, calling it impossible to implement.”

Truth Behind the Claim:

As this claim began gaining traction online, it drew our attention. The D-Intent Data Team immediately launched an investigation by conducting keyword research and reviewing statements from official government sources and credible news outlets. Our findings reveal that the claim being circulated is misleading and not new. India has always opposed the idea of a BRICS joint currency this is not new. In December 2024, EAM S. Jaishankar clearly stated there was “no proposal for a BRICS currency,” as reported by The Tribune, Telegraph India, and Economic Times. India’s BRICS Sherpa also confirmed that any discussion on a common currency is still in very early stages. The claim is being falsely shared as breaking news to stir narratives ahead of the BRICS summit.

INTENT:

Propaganda accounts are recycling old positions and presenting them as breaking news to mislead the public and shape a narrative around India’s global trade stance.
