Fact-Check: Manipur Protest Rally by Meitei Group in the wake of Kuki Women Assault case.

Social media is flooded with pictures of the Manipur Portest Rally. The media reports on the protest against the arrest of individuals who paraded the Kukui ladies in public and sexually assaulted them which was organized by the Meitei organization. Social media users are responding strongly to this breaking news strongly and, are questioning the legitimacy of the current government.

Ashok Swain @ashoswai  shared the image of the protest quoting “Protest rally in Manipur by the majoritarian Meitei group against the arrest of those who had publicly paraded and sexually assaulted Kuki women. Modi has made Manipur another Gujarat!”

Another Twitter user named @BhavikaKapoor5 shared the image and criticized the local government. Siasat Daily a news website reported the claimed news on their website and another tweet by @DilipKu24388061

Fact-Check

Our team did some research and found many media reports connected to the news with detailed facts.

On July 29, 2023, the prominent news organization The New Indian Express reported a story along with the photography. An important civil society organization reportedly planned a sizable gathering on July 29, 2023, in Imphal, the state capital of Manipur, to call for action against “Kuki-Chin terrorists”. The protest was held in response to the current ethnic fighting in the northeastern state and to uphold Manipur’s territorial integrity in the face of the Kuki-Zo-Chin tribe’s aspiration for a separate government.

This incident was also covered by Republic World and many other media houses.

Conclusion

The verification shows that the viral report regarding the rally is false.

The report is about a protest gathering in Imphal where participants called for action against  “Kuki-Chin terrorists” who they claimed were behind the ethnic conflicts in the northeast state.

As a result, the assertion made by users of social media is false.
