Image Of Gama Pahalwan Falsely Circulated as Vegetarian Brahmin Wrestler: Fact-Check

It has been claimed that a Brahmin vegetarian wrestler defeated a Muslim Pehalwan three times, based on an image of the wrestler carrying a mace (Gada).

Verified accounts on twitter, including @SheetalPronamo claimed in a twitter post that the Brahmin Vegetarian wrestler beat to a Muslim Pehalwan thrice. The user added “Many professional athletes, including wrestlers, follow vegetarian or vegan diets to meet their nutritional needs and maintain their strength and stamina”. The tweet was made on Jan 13, 2024, which has received an about 119.7k views on X. The archive can be read from above.

What is the Actual Truth About this Incident? : Fact

The truth is that “Gama Pahalwan,” who is featured in the image, a well-known Muslim wrestler, is not vegetarian. Gama Pahalwan used to consume 100 rotis, half a litre of ghee, ten litres of milk, six desi chickens, almond syrup, and one and a half litres of butter every day. His actual name is Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt in real life, according to Wikipedia. He was not a Brahmin, nor was he a vegetarian. The assertions are unfounded and untrue.

Influencers are circulating unrelated images with false claims to set their propaganda based on religion and broadcasting their own ignorance. A picture of a wrestler carrying a gada (mace) has gone viral, purporting to show that this Brahmin vegetarian wrestler beat a Muslim pehalwan three times. But, after proper research, analysis and fact-checking, we have discovered that this picture actually shows the well-known Muslim wrestler “Gama Pahalwan,” who is not vegetarian. Gama Pahalwan would consume six desi chicken, ten litres of milk, fifty percent of a litre of ghee, one and a half litres of butter, almond syrup, and one hundred rotis throughout the day. Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt was his original name. He was neither a Brahmin nor a vegetarian.

Fact : The truth is that this image depicts the famous Muslim wrestler and non-vegetarian “Gama Pahalwan”. Gama Pahalwan used to eat 6 desi chickens, 10 litres of milk, half a litre of ghee, 1.5 litres of butter, almond syrup, and 100 rotis per day. His actual name was Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt. He was not a vegetarian or a Brahmin. The claims are false and unsubstantiated.
