Fact Check: Old unverified video of a man washing potatoes with his feet circulated with distorted claims

A video depicting an individual man washing potatoes with his feet while wearing slippers has been circulated claiming to be a recent incident from Saharanpur. However, D-Intent Data has found that the video was old and unverified and the claims are not true. The Saharanpur police have explicitly stated that this assertion is misleading and the video does not originate from their jurisdiction.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @iamharunkhan wrote. Shop- “Kumar Sweet”. Quality- Samosa , Aloo Puri Sabzi. Address- Near Ghantaghar, Saharanpur, UP. Now no one’s feelings will be hurt because it is “Kumar Sweet”. Later, he deleted the post.

Another propaganda account @INDStoryS has also disseminated the video and wrote. “Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. At Ghantaghar Kumar Sweet, All of you are served samosa or aloo puri sabzi like this, #Kumar_Sweet, Please see. Please note that the sentiments of the 100 crore residents are not hurt”. (Translated from Hindi).

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also shared the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @MR_COOL77777, @md_mehfuzalam, @TheGuyUnreal, @EbrahimNasreen, @azizkavish

The truth behind the claims about a man washing potatoes with his feet, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was old, unverified and unrelated to Saharanpur.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to a media report (Dainik Bhaskar) containing the same visuals, published in January 2023. According to the report, the video was initially circulated claiming to be from Meerut, but the shopkeeper and the Meerut police have firmly denied any such event occurring in his establishment. The shopkeeper said that the video was fabricated with the intent to tarnish his reputation. In response to the situation, he had filed a formal complaint against an unknown individual for defamation.

During the research, we also found the Saharanpur police’s statement regarding the video, the police said. “The viral video is not related to Saharanpur district. Legal action will be taken against those spreading misleading and wrong information”.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the viral video was old, unverified and unrelated to Saharanpur. As of now, the video is not verified, and no verified sources support the claims made by the propagandists.
