Fact Check: Video of People Preparing Bhang Drink Incorrectly Circulated as Dung Drink

A video currently circulating online incorrectly claims that it shows people preparing a drink by mixing dung with milk, water, and ice. However, D-Intent Data has found that the video depicts the preparation of bhang, a traditional Indian drink made from cannabis leaves. The ingredients and preparation methods shown are consistent with those used in making bhang and do not involve any dung.

Sharing the video on X’s (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account, @s_afreen7 wrote, is this an energy drink? Rest of people beware of such dung syrup! Later, she edited the post and removed the ‘dung’ word.

Another user, responding to the same video,  @faizaan313 wrote. “Welcome to you modi great India “Come here Eat and Drink COW Dung and Urine. “Eating this Cures every disease and every types of Cancer, This miracle has become a miracle”Chamatkaar Karishma Ajooba Mozja”

The truth about the viral video shown as Dung Drink, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video of people preparing drinks came to our notice, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the people were not preparing a drink made with dung, but in reality, it was ‘Bhang’, a traditional Indian drink made with cannabis leaves.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to an Instagram post containing the same video uploaded in March 2024. According to the Instagram post, they are preparing a Bhang drink during Mahashivratri, 2024. Upon further investigation, we found multiple reports (1, 2)containing a similar ‘Bhang ki Goli or Gola’.

The ingredients and preparation methods shown are consistent with those used in making bhang and do not involve any dung. Bhang is typically consumed during festivals like Holi and is known for its use of cannabis, not any type of animal waste.

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the people are not mixing dung with milk, water and ice but preparing Bhang drinks during a festival.
