Fact Check: Old video of a stand-off between Assam Rifles and Manipur Police shared with misleading claims 

Recently, a video has circulated showing a verbal altercation between police and security forces, with claims that Indian Army personnel were harassed and threatened by Meitei Police in Imphal. However, this video is actually from a standoff in Kakching district between Manipur police and Assam Rifles in June 2023. It is an old video and is unrelated to the Indian Army, Meitei people, or Meitei police.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) @being_chikim  wrote. “Indian Army personnel were harassed and threatened by Meitei Police in Imphal.” As of now, the post has received more than 80k views and a significant number of engagements. 

The truth about the video, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice, we researched and analyzed the video. And found that the video was old and unrelated to the Indian Army, Meitei people or Meitei Police.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to media reports containing the same visuals uploaded/published in June 2023. According to the reports. The video shows a stand-off between personnel of Manipur Police and AR at Sugnu Police Station in Kakching. In June 2023. 

The reason behind the confrontation was unknown. According to a local media(Ukhrul Times ) report. An enquiry was initiated to find the truth behind the stand-off between personnel of Manipur Police and Assam Rifles (AR) in front of Sugnu Police Station in Kakching district. Additionally, the chief minister said that the unfortunate stand-off erupted out of a misunderstanding between the two forces in their efforts to retrieve dead bodies of some persons killed in recent violent incidents and lying at a place under the jurisdiction of Sugnu police station of Kakching police station. The state government has initiated an enquiry into the incident after due consultation with the pertinent authorities of the Central government.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video is old and has nothing to do with the Indian Army, Imphal and Meitei people or Meitei Police.
