Fact Check: Old video of Ramadan and Easter celebrations in Belgium circulated with distorted claims

A video showing a large gathering on a city street at night features long tables with benches set up along the road for Ramadan, covered with plates of food as people sit closely together, sharing a meal. Subsequently, this video has been shared with the claim that it depicts a recent Iftar event attended by members of the Muslim community in the Borgerhout district of Antwerp, Belgium. However, in reality, this is an old video from March 2024. The event was not exclusive to the Muslim community.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter), @PsyGuy007 wrote, “This is Ramadan in the city of Antwerp. Belgium is doomed” (Translated from French).

Propaganda account @realMaalouf also shared the video and wrote, This is Antwerp, Belgium. The city’s downtown looks like this every day at the time of breaking the fast throughout the entire month of Ramadan. Tragic.

Several other users and Influencers have also disseminated the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here: @LBleuBlancRouge, @FranceSouvUnie.

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis regarding the claims. We found that the video was old and not exclusively for Ramadan.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keyword searches and found multiple reports regarding the event. This is an old video from March 2024, and the event was not exclusive to the Muslim community. According to reports (1, 2, 3, 4), in March 2024, Borgerhout hosted a remarkable event where a 2-kilometer-long dinner table was set up to celebrate both Easter and Ramadan. This initiative aimed to promote unity and interfaith harmony by bringing together approximately 7,000 residents from diverse backgrounds to share a communal meal.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the video was old, and the event was not exclusive to the Muslim community.
