Fact Check: Pentagon says China captured 16,642 square kilometers of Indian territory in the Arunachal region?

Pakistan-based anti-India propaganda accounts are spreading false claims that the Pentagon stated China has captured 16,642 square kilometres of Indian territory in the Arunachal region. These claims are entirely fabricated. The recent Pentagon report makes no such assertion.

Making a post on X(Formerly Twitter) serial fake news peddler and propagandist account @NavCom24 wrote,. “China reclaims another 16,642 square km of Indian territory in Arunachal region, Pentagon.”

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also disseminated the same claims. Their posts can be seen here, @News_Politics24, @GoMuktadir, @Ben_Nature2

The truth behind the claims, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the claims made by the propagandists came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the claims and found that these claims were not true.

To verify the claims made by the propagandists. We accessed the recent Pentagon annual report on Military and Security development in China. The recent Pentagon report makes no such assertion.

It stated that tensions between China and India along the LAC have persisted due to differing border perceptions. The 2020 Galwan Valley clash, the most violent in 45 years, resulted in casualties on both sides. Despite 21 rounds of commander-level talks & ongoing diplomatic efforts, the PLA maintains its deployments. The report mentioned that the PLA had not drawn down its positions or troop numbers since 2020 but didn’t claim new clashes.

Economic Times misinterpreted the TOI report and claimed that the Pentagon’s annual assessment suggests that China has kept approximately 120,000 troops & missiles stationed along LAC. This is factually incorrect; it was reported by the TOI last month, not the Pentagon.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the claims made by Propagandists are false and fabricated.
