Fact Check: Was Hashim Amla fasting during his 311* inning against England at The Oval in 2012?

In one of the most iconic performances in Test cricket history, South African batsman Hashim Amla secured his place in the record books with an unbeaten 311 against England at The Oval in 2012. Recently, visuals of Mohammed Shami consuming an energy drink during the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai, coinciding with the observance of Ramadan, have sparked claims that Hashim Amla was fasting during his legendary 311* innings in July 2012. However, these claims are inaccurate and lack a factual basis.

Making a post on X (Formerly Twitter), @iabrarsaleem wrote, “Take a cue from Hashim Amla’s remarkable inning, where he played this incredible knock while fasting during Ramadan. In the cricketing world of Mohammad Shami, I aspire to emulate Amla’s perseverance, discipline, and faith.”

The truth behind the claims about Hashim Amla fasting during match, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the claims made by influencers came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the claims. We found that these claims were not true.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keyword searches and found a report containing Hashim Amla’s statement regarding the incident. The Guardian Report published in July 2012 indicates that Amla himself clarified he was not fasting because he was traveling. As he explained, “Because I’m travelling away from home, I don’t have to fast. So I haven’t been fasting. But I will make it up when I get home.”

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that Hashim Amla was not fasting during the Match against England in July 2012.
