A video has been circulating online that depicts a masked man violently attacking a woman in public with a pipe. Some claims suggest that this video demonstrates extremists in Bangladesh beating women for not wearing a burqa. However, the truth is that the assault is not related to religious extremism or burqa enforcement. The man is targeting female sex workers in Bangladesh, and the incident is unrelated to burqas or religious hate crimes.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) @InsightGL wrote. “-Welcome to #Bangladesh a new Afghanistan -Women are beaten if not wearing burka. Durga Puja to stop 5 times a day to give way for Namaz -#Hindus are living under threat & fear. But we have #Indian leaders going to the West & giving baseless fake statements just to grab power.”

The truth about the viral video from Bangladesh, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the sensitive visuals of a man violently attacking a female in public came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was unrelated to religious hate crimes and burqa enforcement.

To verify the claims made by the users, we performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to several social media posts containing the same visuals. According to the social media posts(1, 2, 3, 4), the video shows a group of people targeting female sex workers in Bangladesh’s Dhaka. Taking cues from the social media posts, we ran a relevant keyword search and found media reports regarding the incident. According to the media reports(1, 2), Floating sex workers in Dhaka have been assaulted by groups of young men over the past few days in various areas.

The incident occurred near Shyamoli Square Shopping Mall in the capital. Kallyanmayi Nari Sangha, an organization working with floating sex workers, reported that women had been repeatedly attacked in this manner since August 27. At least 60 female sex workers had been injured in these incidents.

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the viral video of a man assaulting a woman was not related to religious hate crimes. However, the visuals are violent but it doesn’t depict crimes against minorities and crimes against women for not wearing Burqa.
