In recent news, the city of Bareilly has been embroiled in controversy as authorities took action to demolish an illegal madrasa and shops. The district authorities on Thursday razed a madrasa and 12 shops constructed illegally on the gram sabha land in Ruppur Paiga village in Nawabganj township of Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. As soon as the news came to light, propaganda accounts started circulating the information with distorted claims and tried to give it a communal angle. Here are the facts you need to know.

The well-known fake news spreader account “Hate Detector” (Archived) posted a video of the anti-encroachment drive and tried to prove the illegal Madrasa and shops constructions as legal.

Research, Analysis & Fact

To verify the claims D-Intent Data found media reports about the anti-encroachment drive in Ruppur Paiga village in Nawabganj township of Bareilly district. According to The Print (Archived), “SDM Nawabganj Rajesh Chandra said a few years ago, some people had occupied the gram sabha land and built a madrasa in connivance with the village head. They also built a dozen shops and rented them out”.

In March an investigation was taken up on the complaint of villagers about the illegal constructions, the investigation revealed that the structures were built illegally and the District Magistrate directed Nawabganj SDM to take action.
