Fact Check: Swara Bhasker’s husband Fahad Ahmad falsely claims EVM tampering in his constituency

After the Maharashtra Assembly election results for the Anushakti Nagar constituency, Fahad Ahmed, NCP(SP) candidate and husband of actress and political activist Swara Bhasker, alleged irregularities in the counting process. Ahmed claimed that he was leading in all 16 initial rounds, but after EVM machines with 99% battery were opened, BJP-supported NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) candidate Sana Malik overtook him. He further alleged EVM manipulation. However, data from the Election Commission of India (ECI) shows a different picture. Know the truth.

Releasing a video statement on X (Formerly Twitter) Fahad Ahmad (2) wrote, “After round 16 and a steady lead in all rounds.. EVM machines that were 99% charged were opened and BJP-supported NCP Ajit Pawar candidate took a lead .. @ECISVEEP @SpokespersonECI this is rank manipulation. We demand a recount of rounds 16, 17, 18 and 19.”

Several influential people including Swara Bhaskar (2) and others like @IqraMunawwar_FC have also disseminated the claims targeting the authorities.

The truth behind the claims about EVM tampering, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis about the claims made by Fahad Ahmad. We found that Fahad Ahmad falsely claimed that he was leading in all rounds till 16. The claims about EVM tampering were also found to be false.

To verify the claims made by Fahad Ahmad and his supporters. We visited the ECI website to find the reality. The data from the Election Commission of India (ECI) shows that Fahad Ahmad was trailing at the end of the 4th, 5th, and 6th rounds, took the lead in the 7th round, and maintained it until the 17th round. In the final two rounds (18th and 19th), Sana Malik gained a lead and ultimately won by a margin of 3,378 votes.

Additionally, we found a report in which the ECI has already clarified that the battery voltage or capacity of the EVMs is unrelated to the vote-counting process or the integrity of the devices.

Later, Fahad Ahmad accepted his defeat. He made a post on X and wrote, “We accept the election result. Congratulations to Ms. Sana Malik. I hope you will serve our constituency without discrimination or favour. Thanks to all my voters, supporters & team. I will always stand by you and be there for you. This is just the beginning”
