Fact Check: AI-generated videos circulated after the devastating earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar, on March 28, 2025, causing widespread destruction and loss of life across Myanmar and Thailand. As a result, over 1,650 people have been confirmed dead, while thousands more are injured, and many remain missing. Meanwhile, rescue efforts continue despite ongoing aftershocks and severe infrastructural damage, further complicating relief operations.

Now, several videos depicting chaotic and terrifying tsunami scenes with massive waves are being circulated following the devastating earthquake in Myanmar and nearby regions. However, our investigation reveals that most of these videos are AI-generated.

Case-1 about earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand

A video showing a chaotic and terrifying scene on a beach, where people are frantically running away from a colossal wave crashing onto the shore, has been shared with claims that it depicts the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Bangkok, Thailand. However, the truth is that this video is not real; it is an AI-generated creation.

Case-2 about earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand

Another video, featuring an unusual, enormous wave over the ocean, is being falsely linked to earthquake visuals in Bangkok, Thailand. This video is also AI-generated. Additionally, as of now, there are no reports of a tsunami following the destructive earthquake in Myanmar and the surrounding areas.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that these videos are AI-generated, not real. We found these videos on an Instagram account which uploads such AI-generated content.
