Fact Check: Bangladeshi teenage girl shot dead while attempting to cross the border illegally, propagandists circulate misleading claims

There have been reports circulating claiming that a Bangladeshi teenage girl was shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) in Bangladesh. However, the actual circumstances reveal that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) killed her when she was attempting to cross the border into India illegally. She was not killed by the BSF.

Making a post on X (Formerly Twitter)  @MariaOishe17530 wrote. “Student’s protest is going on in DU campus against the shooting death of Bangladeshi girl Shorna Das (16) by the Indian murderous force BSF on the border and the Indian aggression in Bangladesh. Where is your fake emotion for BD hindu now? “

Another user @ChiddikaAb31861 wrote “Protest rally of Dhaka University students against Indian aggression and murder of our sister Swarna Das by Indian Border Guard Force (BSF) in Kulaura yesterday”. (Translated from Bengali ).

The truth behind the claims of girl shot dead, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident and found that the girl was not killed by BSF, but she was shot dead by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a relevant keyword search which led us to media reports regarding the incident. According to the media reports(1, 2). A minor Hindu girl from Bangladesh was allegedly shot dead by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). While she was trying to cross over to Tripura to escape atrocities in her own country.

Reportedly, Swarna and her parents have been facing problems in Bangladesh since the regime change. In the last three weeks, they attempted to cross over to Tripura thrice but failed. Swarna was shot by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while trying to cross the border with her parents, Rebati Das and Rani Das.

When they were attempting to cross the border near Pillar No. 57 taking advantage of the absence of BSF at night, the BGB opened fire.

Swarna managed to run a short distance after being shot and succumbed to her injuries at the zero point. Her parents went back to Bangladesh but were later caught by BGB and are currently receiving treatment at Moulvibazar District Hospital. As the girl died on Indian soil, Bangladeshi authorities could not retrieve her body. Later, Swarna’s body was handed over to her family through BGB.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the girl was shot dead by BGB. And the propagandists circulated false claims about BSF.

Intent

Propagandists are circulating false and self-invented claims about BSF to set their narrative against India.
