Fact Check: CCTV video of a physical altercation at a shop in Muzaffarnagar circulated with communal claims 

A CCTV video capturing a physical altercation among a group of people has been circulated and portrayed as a religion-based hate crime targeting a Muslim family by emphasizing the religious identity of the victim. However, reports indicate that the incident involved people from the same community. It occurred at a clothing shop in Shahji Market, Muzaffarnagar.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @ItsKhan_Saba wrote. Muzaffarnagar, UP: A Muslim family that had come for shopping of their daughter’s wedding was beaten up by shopkeeper and staff of a clothes store in Muzaffarnagar, UP. Incidence took place on 7 Nov. Victims family filed FIR against the attackers. More details awaited.

The truth about the viral video, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident and found that the incident was not related to religious hate crimes. 

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a relevant keyword search on Google. This led us to local media reports and the police’s statement regarding the incident. According to the media reports (1, 2), the incident involved people from the same community. It occurred at a clothing shop in Shahji Market, Muzaffarnagar, where an argument broke out between a customer and the shopkeeper during a clothing purchase. Following the dispute, the customer called his friends and then assaulted the shop owner and the employees. Police have registered a case and arrested seven individuals connected to the incident.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the incident was not related to religious hate crimes against a family belonging to the Muslim community.
