Fact Check: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi wears shoes worth ₹300,000? No, here is the truth

Claims have surfaced online alleging that Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi wears shoes worth ₹300,000, specifically the Cloud 5 Waterproof model by the Swiss brand On. However, these claims are factually incorrect and misleading.

Sharing the image of Rahul Gandhi’s shoes and a screenshot of the price on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @MrSinha_ wrote, “Pappu talks about capitalism all day, criticizes the rich, and wears shoes worth Rs 3 lakhs… Is capitalism good only when the capital belongs to his family?”

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also disseminated the claims. Their posts can be seen here, @SocialTamasha, @HPhobiaWatch, @IamPolSol, @LutyensWatch,

The truth behind the claims about Rahul Gandhi, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the image and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the claims and found that these claims were not true.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keyword searches and found that the product is indeed listed on the official On website with the same price as claimed. However, when accessing the Indian version of the website, all products (1, 2, 3), including shoes, Pants and T-shirts, display an inflated price of ₹300,000. This inflated pricing is not genuine.

Additionally, a notification on the website states: “Apologies, we’re closed for now, we cannot guarantee deliveries to the area.” This clearly indicates that the website is not operational in India, and the prices shown are likely placeholders or errors, not the actual retail cost.

To determine the real price of the Cloud 5 Waterproof shoes. We checked the same product on the On website for other regions. We found that the shoes in the USA are priced at $170 (approximately ₹14,466). In the UK, the same shoes are priced at £160 (approximately ₹17,000).

Furthermore, we explored Indian e-commerce platforms and found the same product available (1, 2, 3, 4) for purchase with prices ranging between ₹14,000 and ₹25,000. These findings confirm that the actual price of the shoes is far lower than the ₹300,000 figure being claimed.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the price of Rahul Gandhi’s shoes was not ₹300000.
