Fact Check: Year-old video of a massive crowd chanting slogans in support of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi resurfaced with misleading claims

A video showing a large crowd chanting slogans in support of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi while holding green flags is being shared with the claim that it was recently recorded at Priyanka Gandhi’s nomination rally in Wayanad. However, this is an old video that has been available online since at least May 2019. Although there are several recent videos related to the upcoming by-election in Wayanad, this particular video is not connected to it.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @SonOfBharat7 wrote. Begum Priyanka Khatoon said sorry Priyanka Vadra. I filed nomination from Lahore, sorry I filed nomination from Wayanad. After watching the video of the rally in support of Priyanka Vadra, I could not believe that the nomination was filed from Wayanad in India.. Neither the tricolour nor the Congress flag. Only and only the green flag in the hands of the Islamic mob. (Translated from Hindi)

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also shared the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @MeghUpdates, @mainRiniti

The truth about the viral video of massive crowd chanting slogans in support of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the viral video was not recent but an old video from a different location.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to a YouTube video containing the same visuals uploaded in June 2019. We also found the same video uploaded in May 2019 on X (Twitter) claimed to be from Wayanad, Kerala.

Upon closer observation of the video, we noticed a shop named “Aramana Silks” and a Vivo company center in the background. Conducting a keyword search led us to “Aramana Bazar,” a clothing store located in Kasaragod, Kerala. While exploring Google Maps, we found the same “Aramana Silks” shop and the Vivo center next to it. This evidence confirms that the video was filmed in Kasaragod, not Wayanad.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the viral video was not from Priyanka Gandhi’s nomination rally in Wayanad but an old video from Kasaragod.

Intent

Social media users, influencers and propagandists are circulating old videos from Kasaragod with misleading claims to set their political narrative.
