Fact Check: India opened the gates of the Dambur hydroelectric project in Tripura state intentionally?

Several sources are spreading the news that India opened the gates of the Dambur hydroelectric project in Tripura as a political retaliation against the new government in Bangladesh. However, the truth is that Tripura is currently experiencing severe flooding, resulting in multiple fatalities and the displacement of thousands of people. The opening of the project is not a politically motivated action. But a response to the ongoing crisis and the cause of flood in Bangladesh is not due to Indian water.

Sharing a news article regarding the flooding situation in the region, @DerekJGrossman wrote. If India indeed opened the Dambur hydroelectric project in Tripura state without notifying Bangladesh. And if this was done in political retaliation against the new govt, then New Delhi must be held to account. To be fair, heavy rains preceded this event.

Bangladesh-based account Nazmus Sajid Chowdhury (@nazmussajid ) has also shared a video from flooding and wrote. India has created an artificial flood in Bangladesh by releasing water from its dams and you still wonder. Why people hate India so much?

Several other users, influencers, propagandists, organizations and media outlets have also made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @doamuslims, @basherkella, @drhossamsamy65, @doamuslimsbn2, @salwa201188

The truth about the claims about Dambur hydroelectric project, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing different videos of flooding from Bangladesh and claims about Indian water came to our notice, we conducted research and analysis of the entire information and found that India did not release water intentionally and the cause of water in Bangladesh was not Indian water.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a relevant keyword search on Google. This led us to multiple reports regarding the flooding situation in India’s Northeast region and Bangladesh. According to the reports(HT, India Today NE). India’s Tripura is currently experiencing severe flooding, resulting in multiple fatalities and the displacement of thousands of people. Hence, it’s confirmed from the flooding situation in Tripura that India did not release the water intentionally.

Moreover, India’s Foreign Ministry has issued a statement regarding the flooding situation in Bangladesh and India’s northeast region and clarified the circumstances. India’s foreign Ministry said We have seen concerns being expressed in Bangladesh that the current situation of flood in districts on the eastern borders of Bangladesh has been caused by opening of the Dumbur dam upstream of the Gumti River in Tripura. This is factually not correct. The flood situation in Bangladesh is not due to the release of waters from the Indian dam on the Gumti River, Tripura.

Therefore, it is evident from various media and government sources that the flooding situation in Bangladesh is not due to the release of water from the Indian dam in Tripura.
